Temple Gardens - Moose Jaw

An Invitation:

The LTU is hosting two PD opportunities for teachers interested in learning more about using Blackboard to support their classroom teaching. Participants DO NOT have to be distance educators - indeed over 95% of Blackboard use is by teachers in regular classrooms.  We offer both a beginner session (Dec. 5, 6, and 7) and an advanced session (Dec. 12, 13, and 14).  The LTU has a lab of 12 wireless notebook computers for people to use at the sessions.

Blackboard is a web-based application that is available to all Saskatchewan teachers.  It is reasonably easy to master and allows for password-protected access to learning activities and handouts.  Teachers find that it is very adaptable and can be used at a very simple level at first and can grow as the skills of the instructor grow.  At an advanced level it has built-in tools like email, online discussions, gradebook, online testing, chat, file-sharing and much, much more.  It is generally used by regular classroom teachers to communicate with parents and students, but is also used by teachers instructing at a distance.  Come see what it is all about!

Beginners are those people who have NOT taken part in an online institute and have the following basic computer skills:

  • Start up and shut down the computer.
  • Log on to a computer and computer network.
  • Run applications.
  • Move, copy, delete, and rename files in Windows Explorer or the Mac OS.
  • Browse and search for information on the Internet.
  • Send and receive email, including make attachments.
  • Perform basic software operations like open, save, save as, print, copy, paste, select text, and clicking, double-clicking, or dragging the mouse.

Beginners will learn how to customize the look of their "class", how to add handouts and simple assignments, how to use the calendar, how to have an online discussion, how to add announcements, how to post pictures, and much more.

Advanced Session
To ensure your success in an "Advanced" Blackboard PD, we require that you have attended an LTU-run Online Institute OR that you are absolutely, completely confident that you can:
1. Modify the menu in content, order, and design.
2. Make, modify, and remove Announcements.
3. Add items to the Calendar.
4. Create a functional online Discussion board.
5. Change the name of your 'course' or 'organization'.
6. Enrol users in your 'course' or 'organization'.
7. Add documents and folders to a content area.
8. Use Messages as well as eMail.
9. Get a class list.
10. Create groups of students within the 'course' or 'organization'.

Advanced users will learn about assignments, designing online tests, using the gradebook to display student marks, adding folders of documents, using Blackboard as a school web-site, using Blackboard as a Professional Learning Community, using Blackboard as an electronic portfolio, as well as having glorious time to work on your classes and problem-solve with others.

We have reserved a block of rooms at Temple Gardens - There is special reduced pricing on these rooms, although they are still more than many hotels - you do not need to stay at the Gardens.  The number you need to quote when booking is 5226.  Book early because the rooms will go very quickly.
